Korea's Fall holiday line-up

Historical fiction VS the everyday lives of spies VS comedic horror

Source: KOBIZ

A load of new films are ready to deliver fun and excitement during the Korean Thanksgiving holidays. Here we introduce three of the most anticipated films from the bunch. They come from a variety of different genres: Masquerade is a piece of historical fiction, Gancheop is a spy film with a realistic twist and Ghost Sweepers is a comic horror film. The three will be intensely competing with each other, hopefully enhancing an already robust Korean film market.

Masquerade
Gross Production Cost: KRW 10 billion | Historical Fiction | Release date: Sept. 20th

Directed by Choo Chang-min | Starring Lee Byung-hun, Ryu Seung-ryong, Han Hyo-joo, Kim In-kwon, Jang Gwang and Shim Eun-kyoung

Key fact: A triple role for Lee Byung-hun

Storyline: Ha-seon, a common performer, lives for ten days disguised as Prince Gwanghae, who has been threatened with a possible poisoning.

Crucial Scene: Tension grows when ‘the real king’ and ‘the fake king’ meet each other, Lee Byung-hun playing both of them.

Notable Remark: “This is a serious discourse on the image of a leader that contemporary times call for, but the voice is rather humorous throughout. Why do politicians lack the simple logic that even a common street performer can figure out?” - Producer Won Dong-yeon

Storm Shadow Meets Slapstick Comedy

Lee Byung-hun plays three roles in the film: the performer Ha-seon, Prince Gwanghae and of course Ha-seon as he pretends to be Prince Gwanghae. The crucial aspect of his acting is the difference he can create between the characters. Won Dong-yeon, CEO of REALies thought, "Lee Byung-hun is the only one who can play this difficult role," as soon as he read the scenario.

He added, “Acting as Prince Gwanghae and Ha-seon might be easy, but it is a different story when one actor has to simultaneously play as both of them in a single scene, which he managed to do quite well. By virtue of his abilities, not a single scene of the film gets boring.”

Lee Byung-hun was working on G.I. Joe: Retaliation in Hollywood when casting decision were being made. Producer Won Dong-yeon and Director Choo Chang-min didn’t hesitate to fly to Los Angeles to meet him. Yet, Lee Byung-hun was not sure if he could act in a comedy film. Won Dong-yeon said, “This film contains slapstick comedy. I knew he was worried because he had usually played serious characters up to this point. On the other hand, I also knew how humorous he is. All he needed to do was show his true nature.” After Lee Byung-hun became a Hollywood star, he was ironically pushed far from the public. However, Won Dong-yeon quelch the existing prejudice against him and said, “Once you watch this film, he will look like the guy next door. You will feel very familiar with him. He dares do whatever he can. He shows his butt and rolls on the ground.”

Most of the scenes in Masquerade in the palace. Therefore the space of the palace becomes a very important element throughout the film. Scenes were actually shot at some of the real historical palaces in Seoul including Gyeongbok Palace, Changdeok Palace and Gyeonghee Palace. Only minimal computer graphics were used for background effects. Although the film is not a fusion of new and old but a legitimate historical drama, it aims at offering an eloquent and modern visuality. Also heightening the film's ambience is an orchestra of 60 musicians, lending it both class and dignity and making the soundtrack a must-listen.

The confusing and conspiratorial 15th ruler of Korea's Joseon Dynasty King Gwanghae (Lee Byung-hun) orders his councilor, Heo Gyun (Ryoo Seung-Ryong), to find him a double in order to avoid the constant threat of assassination. Heo Gyun finds Ha-sun, a beggar who looks remarkably like the king, and just as feared, Gwang-hae is poisoned. Heo Gyun proposes Ha-sun fill the role as the king until Gwang-hae recovers fully and grooms Ha-sun to look and act every bit the king. While assuming the role of the king at his first official appearance, Ha-sun begins to ponder the intricacies of the problems debated in his court. Being fundamentally more humanitarian than Gwang-hae, Ha-sun’s affection and appreciation of even the most minor servants slowly changes morale in the palace for the better. Over time he finds his voice and takes control of governing the country with real insight and fair judgments. Even Heo Gyun is moved by Ha-sun’s genuine concern for the people, and realizes he is an infinitely better ruler than Gwang-hae. However, his chief opposition, Park Chung-seo (Kim Myung-gon), notices the sudden shift in the king’s behavior and starts to ask questions. The queen (Han Hyo-joo) is also conflicted between the real king and the fake king’s secret.

Lee Byung Hun to star as King of Joseon
Source: KOBIZ

Top Korean star Lee Byung-hun is set to play the lead in CJ E&M Pictures’ Masquerade (working title). Lee’s management agency BH Entertainment announced that he is confirmed to star in the historical drama to be directed by Choo Chang-min (Late Blossom) and written by Hwang Jo-yun (Old Boy).

At the moment, Lee is playing the role of Storm Shadow in the Hollywood production G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation which is shooting in New Orleans. He played the same character in the 2009 film G.I Joe: the Rise of Cobra. His other credits include starring in Kim Jee-woon’s The Good, the Bad, the Weird and I Saw the Devil, as well as Park Chan-wook’s Joint Security Area (JSA). With a hot fan base in Japan, Lee is due to return to Korea and prepare for a Japanese arena tour where he will meet with an estimated 60,000 fans at the end of the year.

Choo previously directed the hit comedy Mapado: Island of Fortunes (2004) and the romantic senior citizen drama Late Blossom which became a sleeper hit through word of mouth after it was released in February this year.

Masquerade is a sort of “The Prince and the Pauper” story where a commoner of the lowest class takes the place of the ruling monarch Gwanghaegun and comes to realize all that the position entails. The Korean title translates as “I Am a/the King of Joseon”.

Lee will act in both the roles of the charismatic king and the sympathetic commoner, with a romantic connection with the queen as well. Formerly, director Kang Woo-suk (Silmido, Glove) was reported to be attached to the project but Choo is now set to direct.

The film is due to start shooting early next year with a budget of US$8 million.

Leading South Korean studio CJ E&M confirms top star Lee Byung-hun is set to play the lead in historical drama Masquerade (working title). The Prince and the Pauper” type story is to be directed by Choo Chang-min, whose drama Late Blossom became a word-of-mouth sleeper hit earlier this year. Screenwriter Hwang Jo-yun, whose credits include Old Boy, is writing the script.

Lee was in the US playing the role of Storm Shadow in the Hollywood production G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation. He is continuing the role from 2009’s G.I Joe: the Rise of Cobra. The prolific star’s other credits include starring in Kim Jee-woon’s I Saw the Devil and The Good, The Bad, The Weird as well as Park Chan-wook’s Joint Security Area (JSA).

Set in the Joseon Dynasty, the costume drama Masquerade will feature Lee playing two roles - a charismatic monarch and the sympathetic commoner who takes his place and learns about the realities of ruling. The story also involves a love connection with the queen.

Although veteran director Kang Woo-suk (Silmido) was previously reported to be attached to the project, Choo has been locked to direct. In addition to his recent heartwarming and romantic hit Late Blossom, he had also proved his abilities with the hit comedy Mapado: Island of Fortunes (2004).

Budgeted at $8m, Masquerade is due to start shooting in mid-January 2012.

Broadcasting station, especially television drama production, is often called as the core of desire and materialism. TV station is the place of envy for many people, but they also criticize it as the place where unethical thoughts are generalized. However, those who work in drama production team are not different from us; they are common people who need love and care just like others. Most of Korean dramas are focused on family problems and troubled relationships between lovers. However, for the moderners, workplace is where they spend most of their time. If one fails to build decent relationships with others in his workplace, it would be hard to read his life as a success. “Worlds Within” will bring out the stories of drama production staffs; the warm, touching stories of their love and life.

Kim Go-eun as Hong-ee / Seol-hee

Kim Tae-woo as Jon-bok

This is a story of three swordsmen, Jon-gul, Seol-rang, and Deok-gi, who led an uprising during the Goryeo era. When their desire for freedom and justice is about to be fulfilled, Deok-gi betrays them, leading to the death of Jon-gul, and to Seol-rang disappearing along with Jon-gul's infant daughter Hong-ee. When Seol-rang leaves, Deok-gi intones the prophecy that "You, no, not just you, but you and I both will be killed by Hong-ee."

Eighteen years later, Seol-rang, now called Wallso, is a blind woman with two children who manages a tea house at Byukran port. Determined to take revenge on Deok-gi, Wallso tries to teach Hong-ee to become a master of the sword, but Hong-ee (who changed her name to Seol-hee) is much more interested in day to day affairs than what happened to her father in the past.

One day, a big sword match hosted by the powerful military ruler Deok-gi (now known as Yoo-baek) is held in the market. Seol-hee participates in the match despite Wallso's objections. As the match progresses, she ends up fighting Yull, who is the master of the sword.

Yoo-baek realizes that Seol-hee's skill with the sword is similar to Seol-rang's, whom he had once loved. Yoo-baek orders his subordinates to catch Seol-hee, but she is able to run away. That same night, Seol-hee learns how her father, Jon-gul died. Wallso tells her that there are two enemies that Seol-hee is destined to vanquish: Yoo-baek, and Wallso herself. Shocked and desperate, Seol-hee leaves home: the beginning of a long journey of revenge. (Wikipedia)

I SAW THE DEVIL
악마를 보았다

"Akmareul boattda" In the wake of his successful Western The Good, The Bad, The Weird, Kim Jee-woon was originally planning to shoot a US remake of the 1970s era French thriller Max and the Junkmen. However when progress on that project began to slow, he turned to a smaller project that he had been developing in parallel. I Saw the Devil is a violent thriller about a psychopath who kills for pleasure, starring Choi Min-sik of Oldboy fame. However when he kills the fiancee of a top secret agent, the bereaved agent (played by Lee Byung-hun) turns into a monster himself in order to extract revenge. Reportedly so grisly that many top distributors wouldn't touch it, the film will likely reach theaters in late summer or early fall.

Synopsis: Jang Gyeong-cheol is a dangerous psychopath who kills for pleasure. He has committed infernal serial murders in diabolic ways that one cannot even imagine and his victims range from young women to even children. The police have chased him for a long time, but were unable to catch him. One day the daughter of a retired police chief becomes his prey and is found dead in a horrific state. Her fiance Kim Soo-hyeon, a top secret agent, decides to track down the murderer himself. He promises himself that he will do everything in his power to take bloody vengeance against the killer, even if it means that he must become a monster himself.

CLASH OF FIRE-LIKE MADNESS AND ICE-LIKE LUNACY
By HAN Sunhee (August 10, 2010)

According to director KIM Jee-woon, I Saw the Devil is “a film that talks of a clash between fire-like madness and ice-like lunacy.” Directing a total of five feature films starting from The Quiet Family to The Good, The Bad, The Weird, KIM had each time challenged himself to a different genre. Now for his sixth film, he has chosen a cold-blooded thriller. The screenplay written by PARK Hun-jeong, who also wrote The Unjust and directed The Showdown, was first suggested to KIM Jee-woon through actor CHOI Min-sik (Old Boy). The rumor had spread fast it will be the most horrible and cruel story in Korean film history as far as ‘violence’ goes. As it was announced that the leading role will be played by CHOI Min-sik and LEE Byung-hun, the film instantly drew much attention from in and out of the country.

‘Fire-like madness’ from the film is the serial killer Gyeongcheol played by CHOI Min-sik, while ‘ice-like lunacy’ is Su-hyeon, National Intelligence Service agent played by LEE Byung-hun. Gyeong-cheol brutally assaults Su-hyeon’s fiancé and dismembers her body. From rage and despair of failing to protect his own lover, Su-hyeon decides to get back at Gyeongcheol. Roving around Seoul and Gyeonggi-do in search of his enemy, Su-heyon feels he will not be satisfied with simply taking Gyeong-cheol’s life. He wishes to return the fear and pain his fiancé had to go through in the cruelest and most persistent way. On their first encounter, Su-hyeon warns Gyeong-cheol, “Remember, it will only get worse.” Gyeongcheol replies, “That’s interesting. Bring it on.”

While KIM Jee-woon’s previous films had focused more on the genre-specific styles rather than the characters, I Saw the Devil is expected to be a movie with outstanding powers of the actors that form an extreme contrast. CHOI Min-sik who announced his name to the world with Old Boy, had not appeared in any large scale mainstream commercial films for the last 5 years since he performed in Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. Having worked with CHOI 12 years ago in The Quiet Family, KIM Jee-woon praises CHOI as “the best actor to act a character like fire.” In the new movie, CHOI Min-sik is prepared to become a devil wearing a human mask. Known as ‘KIM Jee-woon’s persona’ for his performance in A Bittersweet Life and The Good, The Bad, The Weird, LEE Byung-hun acts an emotional and delicate man who’s grieving his dead lover but who’s at the same time a cold-hearted person putting down his anger and rage to fight against the evil.

There are many films of violence and revenge, but I Saw the Devil differentiates itself from other common stories of paybacks. In this film, revenge does not mean the victim moving towards the simple goal of finishing the perpetrator’s life. In order to return the pain he had received, Su-hyeon controls his emotions and repeats clasping and letting go of the opponent. Instead of avoiding Su-hyeon’s attacks, Gyeongcheol enjoys the situation and faces him squarely, and in that sense I Saw the Devil keeps up the tension through steady confrontation. The director describes the film religious as the evil is punished, and a story of suffering as it shows the pain of a man.

With its provocative and cruel expressions, perhaps I Saw the Devil will add its title to the ‘Korean Extreme’ list by overseas audiences. However ethical questions may be asked on whether such extreme punishment shown in the movie is in fact correct. To them CHOI Min-sik answers. “What is violence to humans? How is it expressed cinematically? Such points will entertain our audiences.”

Lee Byung-Heon, Choi Min-Shik for Kim Ji-Woon's Next?
by X, November 23, 2009 2:01 AM

The last time we talked about Kim Ji-Woon's upcoming projects, it was regarding his first venture into Hollywood, a remake of Claude Sautet's 70s caper Max et Les Ferrailleurs. Hoping to cast Clive Owen and possibly Sienna Miller in the leading roles, Kim wanted his Max and the Junkmen to start shooting in January, as winter was the perfect atmosphere for his noir ambiance. Seems like the film has hit a snag - we still don't have much in the way of the details, but it might just be casting issues delaying the first shoot past that all important Q1 2010 deadline, pushing things to late next year - so Kim is now focusing on his next project at home, which is tentatively entitled 아열대의 밤 (lit. Subtropical Night).

The film continues the recent noir thriller trend, with a man chasing the serial killer-cum-psychopath who killed his fiancee, and plenty of brutal action ensuing afterwards. Choi Min-Shik was cast in the psychopath role, one of the most inspired choices of recent memory - and a return to major projects for Choi, who's had a pretty rough three-four years, and recently returned to Chungmuro with Jeon Soo-Il's low budget indie 히말라야, 바람이 머무는 곳 (Himalaya, Where the Wind Dwells). Also, Lee Byung-Heon has received an offer to play the "chaser" avenging his fiancee's death. His management confirmed the offer, but also said that because of Lee's Hollywood commitments (G.I. Joe 2), Kim would have to adapt his schedule in accordance. So, again, no ink spilled yet, but if these three get together, this baby could turn as hot as its working title suggests. More on this in the coming months.

Sep-29-2006: initial info from koreanfilm.org

Kim has also leaked out some details about his next feature film, and sure enough after doing comedy, horror, action, and sci-fi, it's time to do a western. It will be set in Manchuria (like all the other Korean neo-Westerns of the 1960s and 70s), and the working title can be translated as THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE STRANGE. He said you can also sort of think of it as a western version of the Hong Kong film SWORDSMAN. Song Kang-ho will apparently take the part of "The Strange". And he rides a motorcycle, not a horse -- because Song said he can't ride a horse.

It will be shot from next March in Mongolia, Manchuria and Vladivostok, and should be ready for release in late 2007 or early 2008.

I'm picturing now that crazy scene in the middle of A BITTERSWEET LIFE where Lee Byung-heon goes to buy a gun, and it's making me very excited about this next project.

Translated by CindyW88
2/8/07 -- Song Kang Ho, Jung Woo Sung, and Lee Byung Hun will lead the movie “The Good, the Bad and the Strange (좋은 놈, 나쁜 놈, 이상한 놈)”. This movie is the Korean version of the famous Western movie “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly". The production cost is around 10 billion Won. Song Kang Ho and Lee Byung Hun each collaborated with this movie’s director Kim Ji Woon (김지운, 43) in the movie “The Foul King (반칙왕, 2000)” and “A Bittersweet Life (달콤한 인생, 2005) respectively.

In this movie, SKH plays “The Strange (이상한 놈)” who always rides a motorcycle and recklessly lives like weed. JWS plays “The Bad (나쁜 놈)” who would murder people in order to get the highest prize. LBH plays “The Good (좋은 놈)” who is a bounty hunter and a sharpshooter although he sometimes has warm heart. The filming of the movie is scheduled in April and will be debuted in the first half of 2008.

QUOTE
From Kim Jee Woon, the director of such hits as The Quiet Family, The Foul King, and A Tale of Two Sisters, comes the stylish, ultraviolent gangster flick, A Bittersweet Life! Lee Byung Hun (Joint Security Area) stars as Sun Woo, a unique character with a curious lifestyle – he's not only a valued gang member and the proprietor of a hotel bar, but also the right-hand man to the powerful gang leader, Mr. Kang (Kim Yeong Chul). When Kang suspects that his beautiful young mistress Hee Soo (Sin Min Ah, from Volcano High) might be messing around with another man, he enlists Sun Woo's help to resolve the matter, commanding him to follow her around to see what information he can dig up. Sun Woo's orders are explicit: if he catches Hee Soo cheating, he is to execute her – no ifs ands or buts about it. However, when Sun Woo spies Hee Soo with her boyfriend, he makes a stunning decision, one that will have major consequences for all involved!
Although the hit film Crying Fist barely edged it out for the top spot at the box office, A Bittersweet Life is a success in its own right, hailed by critics as a dazzling neo-noir thriller, chocked full of breathtaking cinematography, intriguing characters, and an ample dosage of violence just for good measure. In addition, Lee Byung Hun is earning critical raves for his performance as Sun Woo, a super-cool hitman with motivations all his own. But in the end, will Sun Woo make it out alive? Find out in A Bittersweet Life, a film that highlights the shadowy underbelly of Korean society, a place where the streets are dark with something more than night.

Kim Hyun-joong offered lead in Age of Feeling
by javabeans | July 5, 2013 |

Remember Age of Feeling? I’m happy to have the period action melodrama back in headlines now that it’s courting a new hero—this time in Kim Hyun-joong (Playful Kiss, Boys Before Flowers). Maybe third time will be the charm in scoring a lead?

This is a show that always sounded really cool—action and romance in 1930s Shanghai, amidst the Japanese Occupation and expats in China. On the shallowest level available, think of the nifty fashions and hairstyles and period sets. I’m still looking forward to the show, though admittedly the longer it takes for production to pull together, the more things there are that give me pause. First off, if they get Kim Hyun-joong signed on—he is considering the offer, with no decisions reported—it’ll be the third actor they’ve tried to get.

Granted, just because an actor chose against a drama doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with it, but once a show has a hard time getting on a schedule and two stars pass, you start to wonder. First, the show sought to cast Lee Jun-ki in the lead, but Lee chose instead to go with the MBC thriller Two Weeks. Then it was Kwon Sang-woo’s turn, but he has since confirmed with MBC’s Medical Top Team. Maybe MBC just has a really good recruiting process?

This may be a good way for Kim Hyun-joong to get back into the acting swing of things after his last drama, City Conquest, failed to get picked up, especially since his variety program Barefoot Friends is floundering. On the other hand, Kim Hyun-joong… is not my first choice for this drama. Or second. Or third. I’m willing to keep an open mind about the possibility that he’ll be better in the future than he has been in the past—but that doesn’t mean I can ignore how he’s been in the past.

KBS has finally settled on a fall timeslot for Age of Feeling, with an eye toward a November broadcast as a Wednesday-Thursday drama.

Also: For some reason Kim Hyun-joong threads have a way of turning into minefields. I would really, really like for this one to stay sane. Don’t make me go over there.
